Our community of Our Lady of Sion in Birmingham attended a one-woman play based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesam, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. This was supported by the Council of Christians and Jews in conjunction with Birmingham Progressive Synagogue. The play challenged us to rethink questions of resistance, responsibility and humanity. It showed that Etty was determined not to see herself as a victim. As the world closed around her, she nurtured her inner resources to find a freedom within herself that was unshakable. It was a deeply profound and moving play adapted and performed by Susan Stein.
