Scriptural Reasoning at WCLS
Scriptural Reasoning at WCLS

On the 27 of January I was invited by the interfaith group ‘Marylebone Scriptural Reasoning’ to be the Christian speaker, with a Muslim and a Jew at Central West London Synagogue on a theme ‘Environment’. The method that is used for this kind of interfaith meetings is called Scriptural Reasoning. Jews, Muslims and Christians gather together to study each other’s’ sacred texts, and through textual studies get to know each others tradition better. This method: “unlike some forms of inter-faith engagement, it is not about seeking agreement but rather exploring the texts and their possible interpretations across faith boundaries, and learning to ‘disagree better” (for more see http://www.scripturalreasoning.org).). Each session is opened by a short commentary on a chosen text, by a representative of each of the three religions. Rabbi Jackie Tabick chose text from Tanakh: Gen.1:26-31 and Deut.29:19-20, Dr Muhammad al-Hussaini from Quran: Surat ar-Ra'd Ayat 1-4.  I chose a text from New Testament: Luke 12:13-34, reflecting upon when storing leads to death and when it brings life, thus our attitude toward one another and the whole planet. These presentations were followed by very vivid discussions of these texts in smaller mixed faiths groups. For sure the evening was a big success! By the way, R. Tabick is the first woman rabbi ordained at Leo Baeck College, Sheikh Al-Hussaini  also studied at Leo Baeck College and myself in the middle of my PhD research at Leo Baeck College 😊!
